Wave tanks

For the three-dimensional modelling of specific parts of a structure subject to waves from different directions.

LHF wave basin

Dimensions: 30 m (22 useful) x 40 m (30 useful) x 1.5 m (h)

Wave generator comprising sixty 0.5 m independent flaps operated by a servo-electric actuation system

Waves generated are random and multidirectional:

  • 0.5 s < Tp < 10.0 s
  • max. wave height: 0.55 m
  • max. water depth: 1.0 m.

Mechanical system

  • The Artelia wavemaker has a modular multipaddle design capable of generating high- quality directional waves across the water surface. The paddles are piston box type, with water in the back and servo electric actuation system.

  • The system comprises 60 paddles allocated in 10 modules. Each module houses 6 paddles.
  • The wavemaker total length is 30 m, matching the width of the LHF basin.
  • The paddle boards have a height of 1.6 m allowing a working water height of 1.4 m.
  • Paddle nominal width is 0.5 m.
  • Paddle stroke is approximately 1 m.
  • The paddle drive will be carried out by means of state-of-the-art servomotors coupled to a rack and pinion transmission.
  • The nominal power consumption for the complete wavemaker is 162 kW.
  • An active absorption system that compensates the wave reflections and eliminates the re-reflections towards the basin.
  • Modular design allows various configurations such as the L-Shape to reproduce very incident wave direction.

Main characteristics of the wavemaker | ArteLab hydraulics
Main characteristics of the wavemaker

Wave maker engineered by Madrid Advanced Testing Technologies (madTTech), a company specialized in the design of wavemakers (Spain). The wave generator is powered by the renowned AwaSys wave generation software from the Department of Coastal Engineering at Aalborg University (Denmark)

Enhanced control system

madTTech’s control system has been designed to work seamlessly with AwaSys.
The control system of the wavemaker is centralized through a command computer allowing the control and monitoring of all the elements of the wavemaker.
The communication protocol of the control system is based on EtherCAT. offering numerous advantages in connectivity, flexibility and reliability in system configuration.
Control system is extremely fast due to its internal architecture. Response time is typically 50 ms, much lower than commonly used off-the-shelf PID controllers. This fast response is critical for an effective performance of the wavemaker and of the active wave absorption system.

AwaSys 7 is a state-of-the-art program for long-crested and short-crested wave generation including active wave absorption and corner reflection. Awasys allows following wave generation:
  • Regular and irregular waves
  • Bichromatic waves with 2nd order theory

The active absorption system used is presented in Lykke Andersen et al. (2016) and is based on digital filtered of wave gauge signals in the nearfield (gauges located on the moving paddle).
