Hydraulic modelling of a pumping station on the Kagera River (Uganda)

At the end of 2022, VINCI Construction Grands Projets (VCGP) commissioned ARTELIA Laboratory to carry out the hydraulic modelling of a river pumping station that brings water to a water treatment plant on the banks of the Kagera River in Uganda. Financed by the AFD (Agence Française de Développement) and the Ugandan government, this project aims to supply between 34,500 m3/d and 60,900 m3/d of drinking water to the town of Mbarara, which has 80,000 inhabitants.

The model represents the left half of the Kagera River over a length of 200 m. The model aims both at verifying the hydraulic conditions in the structure and at the pump supply, and at analyzing the risk of scouring in the vicinity of the structure during an extreme flood.

After 8 weeks of model design and construction, the Laboratory launched the 20-meters long, 5-meters wide model, which can deliver up to 420 liters per second.

The team is proud of this achievement!
