Gandharbpur water treatment plant Pumping stations (Bangladesh)

Validating the hydraulic design of both Raw water and Treated water pumping stations

Client: SUEZ / VEOLIA - Model scale: 1:7.79

Context

The joint venture composed of SUEZ and OTV (VEOLIA) commissioned ARTELIA to build and operate a physical model of both pumping stations Raw Water and Treated Water) of the Gandharbpur drinking water treatment project under construction near Dhaka.

2 separate models were built to modelize the water and raw water pumping station.

Aims of the physical scale models

The objective of the models is to ensure the proper hydraulic functioning of both structures by checking the following criteria:

  • Submerged and Free surface vortices.
  • Pre-swirl at the pump suction.
  • Non-uniform distribution of the velocity at impeller eye (5 velocity measurements per pump)
  • Entrainment of air or gas bubbles.
  • Flow pattern and energy dissipation.

Description of the physical scale models

The first physical model represents all the relevant geometry of the PS: 2 water supply channels, flow distribution chamber and the pumping bay for the 6 pumps.

The second physical model represents all the relevant geometry of the PS: 3 water inlet pipes, submerged holes and weir feeding the pumping tank and a central pumping tank.

Both of models are also equipped with measurement devices: electromagnetic flow meter, swirl meter and Pitot tubes for local flow velocity.
