Water intake on Fereggiano torrent (Italy)

Underground diversion of the Fereggiano torrent

Client: Genoa Municipal Council - Scale: 1/20

Context
Torrent upstream and downstream of the water intake. Bell shaped vortex drop shaft
Torrent upstream and downstream of the water intake. Bell shaped vortex drop shaft

In the context of the protection of the city of Genoa against violent and recurring torrential floods, Genoa city council commissioned Artelia to develop a physical scale model with a view to checking the dimensional design of the water intake and the underground diversion of the Fereggiano torrent.

Aim of the physical scale model

The general aim of the project is to divert part of the Fereggiano torrent whenever it is in flood, from upstream of the city of Genoa to the sea via an underground pipe (5.2 m diameter) passing under the city. A first physical scale model was developed by Artelia in 2006. Following the review of the project, the aim of the new model is to validate the final dimensional design and the proper hydraulic operation of the structures.

Description of the physical scale model

The model represents:

  • The torrent upstream of the water intake;
  • The water intake;
  • The natural riverbed downstream of the intake;
  • The vortex drop shaft;
  • The stilling chamber;
  • Part of the underground canal;
  • The ventilation shafts.
