Study of the staircase spillway

Client: Ministry of Water Resources of the Sultanate of Oman - Scale: 1/70

Context
General view of scale model from downstream side
General view of scale model from downstream side

ARTELIA was contacted with the aim of protecting the inhabited areas of Wadi Samail against flash floods.

Construction of 4 dams and raising of the existing Al Kawd dam are planned.

Aim of model

Study energy dissipation on the stepped section to optimise the dimensional design of the stilling basin and resection the downstream wadi bed.

Description of scale model

  • Unconfined flood spillway
  • Stepped downstream face
  • Structure height: 56 m
  • Spillway width: 300 m
  • Length of 500 metres downstream
  • Maximum probable flood (MPF): 11,675 m3/s
