Junction of the Fereggiano and Bisagno torrents (Italy)

Sizing of underground structures at a confluence of two torrents

Client : Genoa Municipal Council - Model scale: 1:45

Context

In the context of the protection of the city of Genoa against violent and recurring torrential floods, Genoa city council commissioned ARTELIA to develop a physical scale model to check the confluence of the underground diversions of the Fereggiano and Bisagno torrents.

Aim of the physical scale model

The general aim of the project is to divert part of the Fereggiano and Bisagno torrents whenever they are in flood, from upstream of the city of Genoa to the sea via underground pipes underneath the city. The two torrents meet just before the sea outfall. The aim of the model is to validate the dimensional design of the underground structures (5.20 m and 9.50 m diameter tunnels) and to check the flows in the pipes, in particular where they meet and at the sea outfall.

Description of the physical scale model

The model represents:

  • A section of the canalised Fereggiano torrent
  • A section of the canalised Bisagno torrent
  • The underground confluence of the 2 torrents
  • The sea outfall
